American armoured cruiser USS Brooklyn (ACR-3) (1892) 1893-1921

Succeeded by the Pennsylvania-class. Ordered on 19 July 1892, approved on 11 February 1893, laid down by William Cramp&Sons, Philadelphia, USA on 2 August 1893, launched by Miss Ida May Schieren on 2 October 1895, commissioned on 1 December 1896, classified as a heavy cruiser CA-3 on 17 July 1920, stricken on 9 March 1921 and sold to be broken up on 20 December 1921. Contracted building costs for hull and machinery 3.450.29 US dollars. Sometimes indicated as an improved New York-design with an increased displacement with around 1.000 tons and improved seagoing performance due to the raised forecastle.

Displacement 9.363 (standard)-10.230 (full load) tons and as dimensions 122,07 (between perpendiculars)-122,71 (over all) x 19,71 x 7,3 (mean) metres or 400.6’-402.7’ x 64.8’x 24’. The coal fuelled machinery consisted of 4 vertical triple expansion reciprocating engines, 7 cylindrical boilers, 5 double-ended boilers and 2 single-ended boilers supplying 16.000 ihp via 2 screw allowing a speed of 20 (design)-21,91 (trials) knots. The crew numbered 561 men. The armour consisted of a 7,6cm/3” thick belt, a deck of 6,4cm/2.5” (forward and aft)-7,6cm/3” (flat middle (amidships)-15,2cm/6” sloped sides, 10,2cm/4” secondary gun sponsons with the turrets, barbettes and conning tower protected by respectively 7,6cm/3” (hoists)-14cm/5.5”, 10,2-20,3cm/4-8” and 21,6cm/8.5”. The armament consisted of 4x2-20,3cm/8” /35 cal Mark ¾ breech loading guns, 12-12,7cm/5” /40 cal quick firing guns, 12-5,7cm/2.2”/6pd Driggs-Schroeder quick firing guns, 4-3,7cm/1.5”/1pd Driggs-Schroeder saluting guns and 5-45,7cm/18” torpedo tubes. Since 1914 4x2-20,3cm/8” /35 cal Mark ¾ breech loading guns, 12-12,7cm/5” /40 cal quick firing guns and 4-3,7cm/1.5”/1pd Driggs-Schroeder saluting guns. Since 1917 4x2-20,3cm/8” /35 cal Mark ¾ breech loading guns, 8-12,7cm/5” /40 cal quick firing guns, 2-7,6cm/3” /50 cal anti aircraft guns  and 4-3,7cm/1.5”/1pd Driggs-Schroeder saluting guns.
