Spain intended to modernize and increase her navy according to the Dutch newspaper Bataviaasch nieuwsblad dated 19 January 1935

An item dated Madrid, Spain 17th reported that the intention was to first modernize the Spanish slightly aged armoured cruisers (1) and to built 12 new gunboats.

1. The Espana-class 15.700 tons battleships consisting of the Espana, Alfonso XIII and Jaime I, built between 1909-1921 and of which the latter two ships still existed in 1935? Both ships were sunk in the year 1937.
