Austrian casemate ironclad Lissa 1867-1895


Laid down at the Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino, San Marco on 27 June 1867, launched on 25 February 1869, commissioned in May 1871, fitted out with new boilers in 1875, rigging modified in 1876, dry-docked at Pola [Pula, Croatia] to replace the rotten wood of her hull 1880-1881, stricken on 13 November 1892 and broken up between 1893-1895. Designed by Romako, built under supervision of chief engineer Soyka.

Displacement 6.080-7.086 tons and as dimensions 86,76 (waterline)-89,38 (over all) x 17,52 x 7,43 (fore)-8,67 (aft) x 8,5 (hold) metres or 284.6-293.2 x 56.8 x ? x 28 feet. Proportion length-beam: 5.13. Submerged surface midshipsection 109,50 cubic metres. The machinery consisted of 1 single 3.619 ihp expansion steam engine and 7 boilers with totally 30 fireboxes allowing a speed of 9,26 (half power with 4 boilers)-12,83-13,29 (trial on measured mile off Veruda on 9 May 1871) knots. With a full speed was the range just 1.420 nautical miles. Coal consumption 1-25 kg/hp pro hour. Full ship rigged with a sail area of 3.112 square metres. Her crew numbered 620 men. Wood made hull and major part of the superstructure (also the casemate) were iron plated. The ends of the casemate however were of iron constructed. The armour consisted of a 15,2cm/6” wrought iron on 77cm/30.3” wood thick belt, 11,4cm/4.5” thick bulkheads with the casemate protected by 12,7cm/5” thick armour. The armament consisted of 12-22,9cm/9” Krupp breech loading guns (10 in the casemate 2 above in a smaller redoubte), 4-8pd muzzle loading rifled guns , 3-3pd muzzle loading rifled guns and a ram bow. Armament in 1880-1881 partly renewed, main armament not changed by the old muzzle loading guns were replaced by 4-9cm/3.5” 24 cal guns, 2-7cm/2.8” 15 cal guns, 3-4,7cm.1.9” Hotchkiss gins and 2-2,5cm/0.98” auto cannon. In 1885 was she furthermore fitted out with torpedo launchers.
