French minister of navy asked for designs of a cruiser 2nd class according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1887-1888 no. 10

An item referred to the magazine le Yacht reporting that the French minister of navy asked his engineers to design a cruiser 2nd class under the following conditions. The armament was to consist of 2-16cm/6.4” guns, 6-14cm guns/5.5“, 2-6,5cm/2.6” guns, 4-4,7cm/1.9” quick firing guns, 8 revolver guns and 4 fish torpedo tubes. There were to be 4 steel made masts, the foremast to be fitted out with 2-4,7cm guns and the two mast in the middle each with 1-3,7cm gun. Rigging foremast with square sails, the other masts gaff rigged. The speed was to be 17,5 (natural)-20 (forced draft) miles. Electrically lightening. Crew to number 300 men.
