An item referred to the Naval and Military Record dated 8 May reporting that the US Navy was designing 6 submarines with a displacement of 2.500 tons of which 3 were fitted out as reconnaissance submarines and 3 as submarine minelayers. The S-class submarine with a displacement of 850 (surfaced)-1.150 9submerged) tons, speed 14-16 (surfaced)-11-12 (submerged ) miles and an armament of 4-53,3cm torpedo tubes had less performed as whished, although not was mentioned what caused this.
