Swedish navy increasing her submarine strength according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1939 no. 10

An item reported that the Swedish submarine Sjöbjörnen (1) was commissioned. With a displacement of 580 (surfaced)-760 (submerged) tons and as dimensions 62 x 6,2 x 3,4 metres. Speed 16 (surfaced)-10 (submerged) miles. The armament consisted of 1-7,5cm/2.95”, 2-2,5cm/1” anti aircraft guns and 4-53,3cm/21” torpedo tubes.(3) On short notice was the Sjöhunden (2) completed. At the Kockum shipyard, Malmö, Sweden were another 3 submarines of the Sjölejönet-class submarines and a coastal submarines ordered.

1. Part of the Sjölejonet-class consisting of the Sjölejonet, Sjöbjörnen, Sjöhunden, Svärdfisken, Tumlaren, Dykaren, Sjöhästen, Sjöormen and Sjöborren. Laid down by Kockums, Malmö, Sweden in 1935, launched on 25 July 1936, completed in September 1938 and stricken in May 1959.
2. Part of the Sjölejonet-class consisting of the Sjölejonet, Sjöbjörnen, Sjöhunden, Svärdfisken, Tumlaren, Dykaren, Sjöhästen, Sjöormen and Sjöborren. Laid down by Kockums, Malmö, Sweden in 1936, launched on 15 January 1937, completed in March 1939 and stricken in November 1964.
3. In fact consisted the armament of 2x1-4cm guns and 6-53,3cm torpedo tubes (3 bow, 1 stern,1x2 trainable). The design of this class was influenced by French innovations like a trainable twin torpedo tubes and 4cm anti aircraft machineguns with mountings stored in special disappearing tight trunks for an optimal smooth hulls, a method used by the Royal Netherlands Navy for her O-12class submarines built between 1928-1932.

This Dutch class is comparable with the Swedish class having a displacement of 610 (surfaced)-754 (submerged) tons and as dimensions 60,42 x 6,83 x 3,6 metres. The innovative succeeding O-16 laid down in 1933 and her successors were much larger than the Swedish Sjölejonet-class.
