An item reported that the fact that Soviet ships on the Danube as far as Vienna, Austria were not inspected by the Hungarian custom service which meant that Soviet ships were the most reliable escape route from Hungary. For a payment of 50.000-100.000 Forints agreed Soviet captains to smuggle people which left the ship at Vienna, Austria. However it was not uncommon that Soviet crewmembers handed them over to the Hungarian government.(1)
