Large numbers of German merchant ships lying in British, French, Italian and Russian harbours according to the Dutch newspaper De Tribune dated 7 August 1916

An item referred to a statement of the British minister Cecil in the British House of Commons that in British harbours 144, in French 12, in Russian 30 and in Italian harbours 59 German merchant ships were seized. England and Italy used those ships, Cecil was not sure what France and Russia did. Portugal sized 71 German steamships and 3 sailing vessels which all after repairs were to be used again. At sea were several German ships captured. The newspaper Figaro reported that of the by Portugal seized ships already 32 were retaken into service on behalf of England. The Figueirra (ex-Rotterdam) made already 3 voyages towards England and the Adelaide was sold to a firm at Cape Town, South Africa and was to be used for transporting frozen meat from Australia towards England.
