Artist impression of a British guided missile destroyer November 1958

First Sea Lord Louis Mountbatten asked in 1955 for redesigning a 4.800 measuring fleet escort into a guided missile destroyer to be armed with the Seaslug missiles on her aft ship. This was a contrary with the then approved hybrid cruiser-destroyer which would have a 15.400 tons displacement like the Dido-class in stead of the preceding Daring-class destroyers serving since the 1950s. The end result was the County-class destroyers with a displacement of 6.200 tons and as dimensions 158,54 x 16 x 6,4 metres or 520.16 x 54 x 21 feet. The armament was a combination of guns, torpedo launchers and guided missile launchers.
