An item reported that under the Polish Six Year plan the Lewant class merchant ships were laid down at Stocznia Gdanska in 1949 and completed in 1952 and 1954. The intention was to keep all five ships in Polish merchant service, however two were handed over to the Soviet Union. General technical details around 2.700 tons gross register tonnage, 4.000 tons deadweight and as dimensions 342.76 (between perpendiculars)-374.13 (overall) x 48.22 x 20.34 feet. Hold No. 3 was refrigerated. The 3.800hp 9SD60 diesel engines were produced by Sulzer Brothers, Winterthur, Switzerland and CRDA, Trieste, Italy, costs 1/818.00 US dollars. The three Polish ships were completed at Stocznia Gdanska, although elsewhere is claimed that the Gdansk was scheduled to be completed in Denmark. Both Russian ships were including the engine to be completed in Denmark. The five ships were the 2.864 GRT Nowa Huta (ex-Warszawa), 2.665 GRT Kopernik (ex-Lodz), 2.668 GRT Gdansk, 2.668 GRT Stavropol (ex-Gdynia) and 2.792 GRT Taganrog (ex-Szczcecin).
