The Austrian and the Egyptian navies in the Levant according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 21 October 1824

Augsburg, 15 October. The newspaper Allgemeine Zeitung published a letter of Alexandria dated 2 August (old style) according to which the expedition towards Morea which departed 17-19 July consisted of 54 warships, 52 Egyptian transports and 91 European merchant ships. The latter were hired for 1/3 and ½ Spanish piasters for each ardeb in the month. On board were nearly 17.000 soldiers trained in European manner, 1.000 soldiers trained in the traditional manner and 1.200 men of the cavalry and the necessary artillery. The amount of gathered men caused all ready in the port malicious diseases which are to increase underway lacking a hospital ship. From Smirna arrived the tiding dated 2 September that Austria ignored the neutrality while their flotilla departed from that port to escort the transports of the pasha of Egyptian which were for main part Austrian!
