Dutch air defence cruiser Hr. Ms. Jacob van Heemskerck (1938-1970) around 1942



Her sister ship was the light cruiser Hr. Ms. Tromp which in the second World War was nick named by the Japanese the 'Ghost ship', while she continuously reappeared despite all tidings being destroyed.

On stocks at the N.V. Ned. Scheepsbouw Maatschappij at Amsterdam 31 October 1938 as building no. 274, launched 16 September 1939 and commissioned 10 May 1940 before being armed due to the outbreak of the war with Germany. She was rebuild as an air defence cruiser while the Dutch fire control systems were left behind at Amsterdam and the British didn't suit with her original armament. The 6-15cm guns were removed and replaced by 5x2 10.2cm guns as main armament, secondary 8-40mm or 4-40mm machineguns and 6 or 8 20mm machineguns and 2 DC rails. Dimensions 131,95 x 12,43 x 4,32m and a displacement of 3.3450 and full load 4.025 tons. 2 Parsons turbines with 4 boilers provided 56.000 hp allowing a speed of 32,5 knots. Her crew numbered in advance 295 later 360 men. Pennants were D 20, KL 1, KV 1, C 803 and at the end as auxiliary ship A879. Since 1951 anchored at Flushing serving for instance as accommodation ship for sailors. Decommissioned 20 November 1969, stricken 27 February 1970 and the same year sold to be broken up.
