Dutch ironclad De Zeven Provincien around 1910

This ship was laid down at the navy yard at Amsterdam 7 February 1908, launched 15 March 1909, trial 8 June 1910 and commissioned at Amsterdam 6 October 1910. Dimensions 101,50 x 17,10 x 6,16m with a displacement of 6.530 tons. Her engines provided 8.516 ihp allowing with 2 screws a speed of 16,27 miles. Original armed with 2-28cm guns, 4-15cm guns, 10-7.5cm guns and 4-3.7cm guns. Her crew numbered 452 men. Her armour was belt 100-150mm, gun turrets 250mm and the command tower 200mm and the deck 50mm. In 4-15 February 1933 was a mutiny on board finished by throwing a bomb on board which killed 23 men. At that moment she was the heaviest armed Dutch warship available in the Dutch East Indies. The main armament of the cruisers Java and Sumatra for instance consisted of 10-15cm guns. She was decommissioned 1 July 1933 at Surabaya and rebuilt as a training ship for gunners and commissioned March 1937 as the Soerabaia. She was rearmed with 2-28cm guns, 2-7.5cm guns,  2-3.7cm guns, 2-12.7mm machineguns and 6-40mm machineguns. Her back mast and fore tunnel was removed. The crew numbered now 176 men. Sunk by a Japanese air attack at Surabaya 18 February 1942 but salvaged by the Japanese and used as a battery ship. Later sunk again in the Westervaarwater [Western fairway] at Surabaya.
