The Russian battle ship Imperator Alexander III later renamed Volya 1911-1936


Part of the so-called Imperatritsa Maria V-class, consisting of three battleships. Ordered 13 April 1911, laid down at the Russi Shipyard at Nikolayev 20 October 15 April 1914, renamed Volya or Volia 29 April 1917 and commissioned 17 July 1917 and since November 1917 part of the Soviet navy which handed her at Novorossiysk over to the German navy 19 June 1918 although keeping her Russian name. As result of the surrender of Germany was she handed over to the United Kingdom 24 November 1918. She was November 1919 renamed in General Alekseyev when she 1 November was transferred to Russia. She was decommissioned 29 December 1920 interned with the remaining ships of the Wrangel’s fleet at Bizerte, Tunisia by France which refused her transfer to the Soviet Union. In end 1920’s was she sold to be broken which not earlier found place as in 1936.

With a displacement of 23,413 long tons or 23,789 tons were her dimensions 551’ x 90’0” x 27’4’. Her 4-shaft Brown-Curtis steam turbines connected with 20 Yarrow water tube boilers supplied 26,200 ship allowing a speed of 21 knots and with the same speed was her range 1,640 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 1,154-1,220 men (sources differs). The armament consisted of ‘4x3-12”guns, 18x1-5.1”guns, 3x1-3”anti aircraft guns and 4x1-18” submerged torpedo tubes. The armour consisted of a 125-262,5mm water line belt, a 9-50mm deck, 250mm gun turrets, 250mm barbettes and a 300mm conning tower.
