The building was ordered by the Miranda law dated 17 February 1915. She was not earlier laid down at Ferrol as 14 April 1923, launched 16 October 1925, commissioned 15 September 1928, decommissioned 31 August 1965 and a year later broken up. Her nickname was Chulo del Cantábrico. Of the Almirante Cervera-clas with as sister ships the Galicia (between 1931-1939 called Libertad) and the Miguel de Cervantes.
With a displacement of 7,475 long tons/7,595 tons standard and 9,237 long tons/9,385 tons full load and as dimensions 579 x 54 x 16’6”. The Parsons type geared turbines combined with 8 Yarrow boilers supplied 80,000 hp allowing a speed of 33 knots. Her crew numbered 566 men. The armament consisted of 3x2 and 2x1-6” guns, 4x4-4” guns, 3-47mm guns and 4x3-21” submerged torpedo tubes. The armour consisted of a 2-3” belt, a 1-2” deck and a 6” conning tower.
