British clipper Cimba 1878-1915


Launched in April 1878 at the yard of A. Hood at Aberdeen for account of A. Nicol&Co. at Aberdeen for the Australian wool trade on the line London-Sydney. Her hull was of iron and painted green with golden scrolls and a yellow stripe while the bulwarks and aloft were painted white. Her figurehead was a lion. Called a ‘tender ship’ while under sail she heeled easily over. In March 1906 sold to Norway and stranded near Pointe Des Monts on 26 July 1915 when underway from Liverpool towards Matane in worse weather caused by the fog. Her measurement was 1,74 gross tonnage and 1,117 net tonnage while under deck she measured 1,022 tons and with as dimensions 223’x 34’6”x 21’7”,, When British flagged her register no. was 77444 and her call sign RKJS.
