Belonged to the Victoria Louise-class especially designed for overseas duties. Keel laid down for the yard building no. 235 in April 1896, launched at the yard of the Stettiner Maschinebau Ag Vulcan on 12 March 1898. Commissioned on 20 April 1899, stricken on 6 December 1919 and broken up a year later at Rendsburg. Between April 1907 and March 1909 was she at the Imperial yard at Danzig rebuild and modernized to serve as a training ship for midshipmen and ship boys. Her armament was changed and the third funnel removed. Building costs as cruiser were 10,270,000 German mark. With a displacement of 5,880 gross register tons-5,660 tons (standard load)-6,491 (full load) tons. were her dimensions 109,19 (waterline)-110,69 (over all) x 17,42 x 6,93 metres. Her 3 triple expansion engines supplied 10,000 ihp allowing a speed of 19,5 knots. Her crew numbered 465-477 men as cruiser and as training ship 684 men. The original armament consisted of 2x1-8.2” guns in a turret for and a turret aft, 8x1-5.9 guns in casemates situated along the length of the ships, 10x1-3.45” guns also in casemates and 3-17.7’ torpedo tubes. The armour consisted of a 4” deck.
