Salvage of the wrecks of the Russian warships in 1858 at Sebastopol according to the Dutch local newspaper Schiedamsche Courant
The Dutch newspaper Schiedamsche Courant dated 2 September 1858 published tidings from St. Petersburg dealing with the rebuilding of Sebastopol as a trade harbour. The wrecks of the warships sunk on the roads were salvaged. Already were 3 ships, including of 120 guns removed. The next step was to remove the 120-gun Paris, the frigate Cowarna and other ships lying on the sea bottom. The 16-gun schooner Smilaja and the steamboat Turek (a Turkish prize) were undamaged salvaged. The latter was in so good condition, including her engine, that’s she was transported towards Nicolajeff and to be fitted out for actual service. Finally were also the Grosniji and the Dunaj salvaged. The ships of the line Paris and Jagudil proved that the Russian warships were built of excellent material.
