The Spanish navy in 1861-1862 according to the Dutch local newspaper Schiedamsche Courant

The Dutch newspaper called Schiedamsche Courant dated 22 August 1861 published a small news item dealing with the Spanish naval strength. It mentioned that thanks to large sacrifices made the navy no longer was decaying. In That year there were 38 sailing ships available, including 2 ships of the line and 6 frigates. The real strength in those nowadays was however determined by the number of (screw) steamships. Spain made a big leap forward with 27 paddle steamships with totally 6.400 hp and 130 guns. There were 6 screw steamships of the latest and best design with total 2.540 hp. There were also 6 frigates and 33 smaller screw steamships like corvettes, goelettes, and gunboats with total 2.450 hp. There were at that moment 10 screw steamships with total 5.600 hp building. Of these 10 frigates were two, namely the Numancia and the Tetouan armoured and each fitted out with 1.000 hp.
