American destroyers guarding Canadian coast according to the Dutch newspaper Het Vaderland evening edition dated 20 August 1940
The United States entered the Second World War not earlier as after the Japanese attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbour on 7 December 1941. Through a simple construction were American forces all ready involved. The newspaper The New York Times reported in August 1940 that the American cabinet decided to sent immediately American destroyers to the Canadian coast for guard duties. This action was a result of the negotiations with the Canadian government making Canadian and British warships stationed in Canadian waters available for duty in British waters. Indirectly was so the British request for the assistance by American destroyers accepted. Probably would Canada allowed the USA the use of Canadian naval and air bases. From Ottawa arrived the tiding that for the first time in the history a Canadian naval liaison and a military liaison officer would be stationed at New York.
