Middelburg, 8 January. The town council of Middelburg handed over in leasehold to Den Bouwmeester, Borsius & van der Leyé a plot to be used as a shipyard. The plot was in use since 1 September 1854 fenced and afterwards a slipway dug and a shed placed. Recently was the keel laid down and the prows directed of the bark ship Stad Middelburg of around 400 measured lasted for own account. The edition dated Tuesday 22 July 1856 reported that she was launched with success on Saturday 19 July from the yard named De Volharding by the ship carpenters J. van Vliet and G. Kam. With a measurement of around 400 lasten was she destined for the oceanic merchant trade shipping.
