Soviet submarine Pravda (P1) 1934-1941


Sister ships were the Zvezda and the Iskra, while the fourth projected submarine never was realized. In the beginning used as training ships later mostly as transports. Laid down on 21 May 1931 at the Ordzhinikidze yard at Leningrad, launched on3 January 1934 but not earlier completed as in 1936 and commissioned on 9 June 1936 and sunk off Hango Finland on 17 September 1941 probably due to mines.

This class was fitted out with a double hull divided in 8 compartments. With a displacement of 1,200 tons surfaced and 1,870 tons submerged were her dimensions 87,6 (over all) x 8,0 x 3,10metres. The two shaft diesel electric engines provided 5,400 hp by the diesel and 1,400 hp by the electric engine allowing a surfaced speed of 18,5 knots and a submerged speed of 7,7 knots with a surfaced range of 2,240 nautical miles with a speed of 18,8 knots and 5,700 nautical miles with a speed of 10 knots and with a submerged range of 15 nautical miles with a speed of 7,7 knots and 105 nautical miles with a speed of 4 knots. The depth during the trials was 75 metres, diving time was within 90 seconds while surfaced to a periscope depth and within 31 seconds fom decks wash also to periscope depth. The crew numbered 54 men. The armament consisted of 6-21” torpedo tubes (4 bow, 2 stern while carrying 10 torpedoes), 2-10cm guns and 1-4,5cm anti aircraft gun.
