Tomb of the Dutch naval officer Philips van Almonde (1644-1711) in the Grote of Sint-Catharijnekerk at Brielle



Born at Den Briel, Netherlands 29/30 December 1644 and died at Oegstgeest, Netherlands 6 January 1711. Appointed by the Admiralty of the Maze (or Rotterdam) on 6 October 1673 as rear admiral. Became on 5 April 1684 vice admiral by the Amiralty of Amsterdam and was mainly occupied with actions against the Algerian privateers. As lieutenant-admiral on 26 March 1692 appointed as supreme commander of the Dutch navy. Left in 1706 actual service while he refused to service under the command of a British naval officer with a lower rank. Returned however in service of the Admiralty of the Maze on 20 December 1707. Died on 6 January 1711 on his estate Haaswijck at Oegstgeest but was reburied in the Grote of Sint-Catharijnekerk at Brielle.
