The French screw steam gunboat no. 11 in 1859

For years was in the Netherlands a magazine published dealing with maritime affairs. It published in 1859 the next item.

The French gunboat no. 11 differs quite from other gunboats. She was built after designs of admiral Dupouy by the engineer Armand of Bordeaux and armed with a rifled breech-loaded gun, able to shoot a cylindrical shape 48pdr bullet with an effective range of 3.500 meter and a maximum of 7.000 meter. A strong armouring of 10 Dutch inch thick iron sheets and 30 inch oak-wood was to protect the crew. There wasn’t a real port-hole just a hole in the armouring to shoot with the gun trough. The vessel was fitted out with two rudders, one at the front and one at the end. In fact was the vessel the carriage for the gun, which could just be fired straight ahead. Only elevation was possible by using the handspikes. The gun was in fact manoeuvred in the right direction by pointing out the vessel using the two rudders towards the target. In fact the enemy just saw a sharp bow special angled to prevent to be pierced by shots which were to glance off. Colonel Treuille was called the inventor, although the emperor was responsible for the basic design. The vessel could be moved by steam and sails. The engine delivered 18 hp and with 200 strokes of the screw each minute her speed was 8,5 knots. The gunboat No. 11 on stocks at Bordeaux 1858, launched 1859, renamed la Guepe 1866 and lastmentioned 1897 according to Vichot?
