The Greek and Turkish navies in the Levant according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 12 March 1823

Trieste, 20 February. The communication between Constantinople and Smyrna was nearly completely cut of by the Greek fleet. While the Greeks all ready captured so many ships almost nobody dears to sent ships loaded with merchandise and victuals towards Constantinople. At all Greek islands were vessels fitted out for maritime operations that delivered such large profits for the Greeks. All ready rise problems between Greeks and European masters which ships were loaded with victuals for Constantinople and who were strictly visited by the Greeks. Egyptian properties were handled very careful more or less confirming the rumours that there was a secret agreement between the Greek admiralty and agents of the pasha. The Greeks entered with some armed vessels and fire ships the channel (at Smyrna?) while capturing some prizes. Until now none Turkish vessels went outside the Strait although it was confirmed that all efforts were done at Constantinople to fit out a fleet.
