In his account of his travels in the Mediterranean, major Grenville Temple paid quite a lot of attention to the navy of Greece. And fortunately, he gave also interesting information dealing with the Turkish navy, the opponent of Greece in their war for independence. (1)
P.38 : “The navy consists of the following vessels: corvette Prince Royal of Bavaria, 20 guns; brig Nelson 20 guns; brig Minerva, 16 guns; brig Hercules, 16 guns; brig Cambrian, 12 guns; barque Phoenix, 16 guns; schooner Lady Codrington 12 guns; schooner Smyrna, 10 guns; schooner Leda, 10 guns; schooner Eucharis, 10 guns;
p. 39: schooner Kara-iskakis ,schooner Argus, 8 guns and ten gun-boats of one gun each.
Few of these vessels carry the armament stated in the above list, and are chiefly employed as packets. The principal naval station is at Poros, and Miaulis is at the head of the marine. Packets have been established at Nauplia, which sail regularly to Malta, Leghorn, Marseilles, Candia, Smyrna, Alexandria, and Trieste.”
