The Spanish navy according to the Dutch newspaper ‘s Hertogenbossche Courant dated 4 April 1780

The Spanish navy numbered some months ago 46 ships of the line but since then are the Phenix, Monarch, Diligente, Princessa and Guipuscoana captured, the St. Domingo exploded, the St. Eugenio and St. Julian by the British admiral Rodney driven on the rocks, the Poderoso sunk underway from Brest towards Cadiz and 2 ships of Don Gaston stranded in the Bay of Cadiz. At the moment there were 35 ships of the line left several in a worse condition caused by storms needing large repairs. The combined French-Spanish fleets numbered 101 ships of the line against 99 of the British.
