The British reserve squadron according to Dutch newspapers in 1858

The newspaper Bredasche Courant dated 19 September published an item dated London 15 September reporting that in the harbour of Chatham were lying 5 ships of the line of 80-120 guns, 19 frigates of 20-51 guns, 17 smaller frigates of 8-18 guns and 3 floating batteries which reserve squadron was suitable for immediate service.

The Nieuw Amsterdamsch handels- en effectenblad dated 31 December reported that according official accounts the reserve of warships at Chatham and Sheerness consisted of 8 ships of the line, 4 floating batteries, 6 screw steam corvettes, 18 steam frigates and other vessels. The ships of the line consisted of the 120-gun Royal George, 1-91 and 6-80 gun ships. Total armament was 1,113 guns.
