In fact similar to the Russian Charlie II-class submarine of which was leased between 1988 and 1991 by India from the Soviet Union although its is also said that she can be compared with the Chinese 093 Shang-class.. The crew for this new class will be trained while using the since December 2011 from Russia leased Akula II-class submarine. This must be the INS Chakra.
As part of the Advanced Technoloy Vessel (ATV) project (costs 2.9 billion American dollars) launched at the yard at the Shipbuilding Centre at Visakhapatnam , India on 26 July 2009 sponsored by Mrs. Gursharan Kaur, spouse of the prime minister Manhoman Singh. The hull was made by Larsen&Toubro’s Hazira shipbuilding facility. The sea trials are probably in February 2011 and she will be operational available in end 2012. Of her class will four units be built and to be operational in 2015. The ATV program dated from 1974 although since 1985 it became more and more seriously.
