Spanish naval strength according to the Dutch newspaper ‘s Hertogenbossche Courant dated 13 April 1779

According to an item dated Madrid 11 March were still preparations going on for an eventual war although unknown with who. Continuous were heavy guns and ammunition send to the southern coasts. It was the second spring season that the navy was on such a large scale fitted out. At Cadiz were 44, at Ferrol 15 and at Cartagena were 4 ships lying ready, totally 53 ships.
