British naval disaster off the island Rugen according to the Dutch newspaper Feuille politique de department du Zuiderzee 25 October 1811

An item dated Hamburg 17 October reported new details dealing with the British disaster off the island Rugen. On 11 October before the evening was close to the shore at the so-called corner of Wittau a convoy sighted of 22 ships including a frigate and a brig. Immediately was on the island the defence prepared when emergency shots were heard indicating that the whole convoy was stranded. By daylight it became clear that the frigate and five transports were refloated but that the brig and 8 merchant ships were set to fire by their own crews. The eight other ships which were to close to the shore were protected by the coastal batteries while they were unloaded. The prizes were loaded with Russian stores and the prisoners of war estimated the loss being more as 10.000.000 (currency unit not mentioned). The convoy had been of a considerable larger fleet which was now dispersed. The French privateer le Compere Mathieu fitted out at Rostock captured a vessel loaded with sugar and coffee and brought it safely into Warnemunde.
