US navy needed at least 145 new ships according to the Dutch newspaper Middelburgsche Courant dated 17 January 1940

An item reported that rear admiral Stark a day earlier in the meeting of the naval commission of the House of Representatives stated that the navy needed 145 new ships to complete the existing and proposed naval shipbuilding program. The Vlissingse Courant dated 17 January confirmed this item adding that the estimated costs were 2.276.000.000 US dollars.
