Venetian naval preparations and movements according to the Dutch newspaper Middelburgsche Courant dated 21 September 1784

According to an item dated Venice 2 September received the Senate worse tidings that the squadron commanded by knight Emo destined towards Tunis as a result of contrary winds and other problems not earlier as 13 August left the channel of Corfu although it was believed that he in the meantime arrived off Tunis. The Senate decided to increase the navy further more. Before the winter were 6 new warships to be launched and two strong squadrons each with a minimum of 20 ships held in service in the Mediterranean excluded the small vessels cruising in the Adriatic. This increase seemed to be caused by the still worse relations with the Dutch republic.
