A tiding from Algiers reported the arrival on 2 June 1767 of a Danish merchant frigate with the annual gifts for the Dey including an extra ordinary 500 quintals gunpowder which were in the spring lacking an other 100 quintals as a private gift for the Dey. The annual gifts were accepted but the gunpowder was returned due to the worse quality. The Dey wanted new powder. The Danish consul promised to do everything possible and in the meantime presented the condemned powder to the Algerian government as a gift! In contrary to the Moroccan emperor ordered the Dey to increase the Algerian navy. Six of the largest chebecqs were lying to depart immediately f so being ordered, four were already cruising and all efforts were done to complete a warship with a keel length of 130 feet. Recently were three Spanish ship captured, one loaded with valuable stores underway from Naples towards Barcelona taken off Toulon with on board 41 Christians which were made slaves namely 28 men, 7 women, three boys and three girls. The crews of the other two ships loaded with ropes and fruits numbered totally 20 men.
