Departure of British transport Avoca towards England delayed according to the Dutch newspaper Goessche Courant dated 20 May 1899

An item reported that the so-called South African League complotted against the South African Republic resulting in arresting of some men while they were forming a corps for an armed revolt. There were British non-commissioned officers involved. The British transport Avoca which was to depart a day earlier from Simonstown towards England received orders not to depart probably of these arrests. It was expected that she was still be ordered to depart soon.

1. The Second Boer War found place between 11 October 1899 and 31 May 1902 and ended in a defeat of the Boers and regaining British sovereignty of the Orange Free State and South African Republic (Transvaal). In 1920 became the Union of South Africa part of the Commonwealth.
