Australian merchant ships were to be armed according to the Dutch newspaper Het Vaderland dated 8 November 1941

An item reported that all Australian merchant ships were immediately armed to protect themselves against attacks. The newspaper Nieuw Venlosche Courant dated 13 November wrote that the Japanese consul general at Sydney his department of foreign affairs of this decision informed adding that non-armed merchant ship were not longer allowed to leave the harbours.
