An item reported that according to British government tidings on 1 January the transport Ivernia of 9,165 tons during heavy weather was torpedoed in the Mediterranean by a submarine. She was transporting troops of which 4 army officers and 120 men were missed. Of the crew were 33 officers and sailors killed. It was believed that of the ships’ officers the first engineer and ship’s doctor were missing. The Soldaten Courant dated 12 January reported that she was torpedoed by a submarine commanded by Steinbauer despite the fact that the Ivernia was escorted by destroyers.(1) Earlier reported this newspaper on the 7th that just two crew members (the first engineer and ship’s doctor ) but also 150 soldiers were missing.
