Brazilian steam corvette Almirante Barrozo wrecked according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 27 May 1893

An item dated Suez, Egypt 25 May reported that total loss of the Almirante Barrosso.(1) Her crew was saved by the British gunboat Dolphin and landed. Before their salvage they suffered heavily on this arid coast.

Sloop rigged composite corvette/1st class cruiser built in 1882 at Rio de Janeiro dockyard with a displacement of 1.928 tons and as dimensions 71,02 (between perpendiculars) x 11,35 x 5,31 metres or 233‘x 37‘3“x 17‘5“. Armed with 8-7.4” guns and a crew numbering 285 men. The newspaper De Tijd dated 25 May published an item dated Suez 23 May reporting that the Brazilian corvette Almirante Barrosso was wrecked off Ras Garib in the Bay of Suez, Egypt. She struck a cliff despite the presence of an Arabian pilot when she was under full speed and within short time was filled with water up to the second deck. The crew managed to escape with the life-boats loosing just on men. The British gunboat Dolphin and the yacht of the khedive Aida were sent the 22nd to assist the survivors.
