An item reported that during the manoeuvres of the British Royal Navy that in the night of Friday-Saturday the gunboat Landrail collided with the freighter 1.482 tons Siren coming from Sydney. The Siren started sinking slowly allowing her crew to escape with their own life-boats and who were picked up by the Landrail. Within 20 minutes sunk the Siren with largo of wool and tallow.(1)

In fact a torpedo gun vessel of the Curlew-class (sister ship Curlew) laid down at the Devonport Dockyard on 5 November 1885, launched 19 November 1886, completed on 10 March 1887 and sunk on 4 October 1906 in Lyme Bay when she was used as a target. With a displacement of 950 tons and as dimensions 195’x 28’ and an armament consisting of 1-6” breech loading gun, 3-5” muzzle loading guns and 3 torpedo tubes.
