Russian warship Russalka lost according to the Dutch newspaper Het nieuws van den dag dated Tuesday 26 September 1893

An item dated Helsingfors 23 September reported that of the two Russian warships the monitor Russalka (1) and the gunboat Tuscha (2) which both left last Tuesday Reval bound for Helsingfors just the Tuscha arrived last Tuesday evening at Helsingfors. Boats discovered at sea many objects of the Russalka and on land was a body found. It was almost certain that she was wrecked in the gale of Tuesday.

1. A coast defence ship of the Charodeika-class with one sister ship the Charodeika. She was laid down at the shipyard of Mitchell, St. Petersburg in 1866, launched a year later, completed in 1868 and lost on 19 September 1893. With a displacement of 2.100 tons were her dimensions 62,94 (waterline) x 12,80 x 3,84 (maximum) metres or 206’6” x 42’x 12’7”. Her crew numbered 178 men. The turrets were protected by 6” thick wrought iron and the side by 4”. The original armament consisted of 2x2-9” guns, 4-3” guns.
2. The Tutcha of the Burin-class laid down at the shipyard of Chrichton, Abo in 1880, launched a year later and finally stricken in 1906. Her crew numbered between 54-57 men. Dimensions 119’4” (waterline) x 29’x 7’9” (maximum). The armament consisted of 1-11” gun and 2-3,4” guns.
