British newly built turbine destroyer HMS Viper involved in collision according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 16 August 1899

An item dated South Shields 12 August reported that the steamship Trevethick while leaving the harbour that morning collided with the Viper caused by the fog.(1) The newly built torpedo boat was lying anchored there and intersected to below the waterline. The Trevethick still seaworthy could continue her voyage.

1. Laid down in 1898 at Armstrong at Elswick although her hull was built by Hawthorn Leslie, launched on 6 September 1899 and completed a year later was already in 1901 when she stranded in the Channel. With a displacement of 344 (light) tons were her dimensions 64,10 (between perpendiculars) x 7,40 metres or 210’3” x 21’. Her four shaft turbines allowed a speed of 33¾ knots.
