German torpedo boat S 26 lost according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 24 September 1897

An item reported that in the afternoon a day earlier near by the first lightship in the mouth of the Elbe the German torpedo boat S 26 (1) in a heavy storm capsized and immediately sunk. Her commanding officer duke Frederik Wilhelm van Mecklenburg (2) and his crew of seven men drowned. Of the torpedo boat S 27 was one sailors swept over board and drowned.(3)

1. The torpedo boats S 24-S 31 were built at Schichau between 1886 and 1887 with a displacement of 101 tons and as dimensions 37,74 x 4,8 x 2,34 metres and with a speed of 19 knots.
2. Frederik Willem Adolf Günther van Mecklenburg-Schwerin (5 April 1871 Schwerin-22 September 1897 Cuxhaven) had the rank of lieutenant.
.3 The edition dated 30 September reported that the wreck was found on a distance of two ship lengths. A diver managed to salvage the body of the cook.
