Thais navy supporting Cambodia according to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf dated 2 June 1970

An item reported that the Thais navy was to support the Cambodian navy in guarding the Mekong river. For this purpose were 20 gunboats to be sent manned by Thais volunteers fitted out and paid by Cambodia. Before their departure towards Pnom Penh received they a special training during around eight weeks. The volunteers were recruited in the Thais army reserve and among Thais citizens of Cambodian origin.(1)

1. At that moment was arevolt going on against the regime of general Lon Nol (13 November 1913 Kampong Leav-17 November 1985 Fullerton). Have been minister of Defence, twice Prime Minister and became after the coup in 1970 against the Cambodian king later president of the Khmer Republic (since 9 October 1970) until 1 April 1975. This republic was replaced by the state known as Democratic Kampuchea. The relations with the USA during the leadership of Lon Nol caused an increasing involvement of Cambodia in the Vietnamese war with North Vietnam and the Vietcong supporting the Red Khmer.
