Dutch cargo vessel Merauke of the Rotterdamsche Lloyd Dutch shipyard Kon.Mij. De Schelde 1910-1931

Of the Dutch shipping company Rotterdamsche Lloyd built for the line Rotterdam-Dutch East Indies. She was on 17 October 1910 ordered by telegram, laid down on the north slip (for which was long waited to b e lengthened) on 29 April 1911 with yard number 143, in the thrushes on 1 August, plating fitted on 9 September, launched on 25 November by Miss E.W.K. van Waveren, boilers placed on the 28th, trial while berthed on 14 February 1912, departed from the yard the 17th, official trial the 18th and delivered. Her maiden voyage started on 2 March. Seized in 1918 by the Allies for war purposes. On 28 January 1929 heavily damaged caused by a collision with the Greek Alcyon. In June 1931 departed towards the Dutch shipyard Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij to be broken up. Built within 16 months. Contracted building costs ƒ 670.000 ship and 330.000 engines and boilers, totally ƒ1.000.000.

Dimensions 131,06 (between perpendiculars)-135,94 (over all) x 16,46 x 7,98 and 8,91 (hold between decks)-11,38 (hold below shelter deck) metres or 430’0”-446’0” x 54’0”x ? x 29’2¾”x 36’1½”. Displacement when launched 2.844 tons with a draught of 4’8½ (fore)-8’4½” (aft). Deadweight 9.275 tons with a draught of 26’2” and a displacement of 13.200 tons with a draught of 26’2”. Capacity below shelter deck 859.140 cubic feet. Tonnage 6.673,84 gross and 4.293,62 net tons. Three decks, six hatches, 14 steam winches and one 30 ton derrick. Cabin accommodation for 6 passengers. Fresh water bunker capacity 60 ton drinking-water and 215 ton freshwater. Ballast 921 ton water+740 ton water in deep tanks. Coal bunker capacity 1.232 tons. The triple expansion 3cylinder engine and four boilers supplied with 80 rpm 3.600 ihp a speed of 12 knots during the trial with a displacement of 13.134 tons and a draught of 25’8”.
