Dutch cargo ship Sumatra of the Stoomvaart Maatschappij “Nederland” 1907-1931

Her building at the Kon.Mij. De Schelde was ordered by the Stoomvaart Maatschappij “Nederland” at Amsterdam on 10 January 1907. Laid down with yard number 128 on 23 May at the southern slip, in the thrushes on 29 August, plating fitted on 10 October, launched on 16 November by Tim Smit, trails while berthed on 3 and 4 January 1908, left the yard on 12 January, official trial the 15th and transferred to the shipping company and on 1 February begun her maiden voyage. Contracted building costs ƒ 920.000. Since 1929 as the Sumatra property of the Ver. Ned. Scheepvaart Mij. Sold in April 1931 to Italy and broken up at Genoa. Her triple compound 3 cylinder engine supplied 2.70 hp during the trials allowing a speed of 11,25 miles. Three cylinders. Passenger accommodation just between decks. Coal bunker capacity 620 ton although another 205 ton in reserve available. Ballast 796 tons of water. Drinking-water bunker capacity 48 ton and a fresh-water bunker capacity 116 tons. Two double pool masts with 8 derricks (including one of 20 ton) and 4 derricks fitted to steel-built tubes. Cargo loading capacity 403.308 cubic feet of bales. Twelve steam winches (4-6, 4-3 and 4-2 ton).  Three decks. Six hatches and six watertight bulkheads. Dimensions 119,93 (between perpendiculars)-123,89 (over all) x 15,62 x 7,01 -2,79 (empty and a displacement of 3.675 tons)-8,87 (full loaded and a displacement of 11.510 tons) and a hold of 8,92 (below main deck)-11,28 (below bridge deck) metres or 393’6”-40”6’6” x 51’3” x 23’0”-9’2”-25’10”. Displacement during the launching 2.850 tons and a draught of 6’1¾ (fore)-8’6¼”. Deadweight 7.835 tons with a draught of 23’10”. Tonnage of 5.850,0 gross and 3.765,75 net tons.
