American torpedo boats were to be painted green according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1896-1897 no. 4

An item referred to the magazine Mittheilungen aus des Geb. des Seewesens which reported that the USS ram ship Katahdin was to be painted green.(1) The intention was to paint all torpedo boats in this colour which supplied the most protection against been seen while operating close to the coast.

1. An ironclad harbour defence ram of which the keel was laid down on 4 February 1893 at Bath and sunk being used as a target in September 1909.
