Laid down in 1892 at Cadiz 1892, launched 12/13 March 1895, completed on 2 June 1998, decommissioned in 1922, In 1930 used as a depot ship at the seamen training at Cadiz and no longer used for seagoing services., stricken in 1933 and finally broken up a year later. With a displacement of 9.993 tons were her dimensions 404¾ (over all) x 67 x 25 (mean)-27 2/3 (maximum) feet. Her crew numbered 583 men. The armament consisted of 2-11” guns, 8-5.5” guns, 2-12pd guns, 8-6pd guns, 8-1pd guns and 2 surfaced 14” torpedo tubes. The armour consisted of a 2½” deck, barbettes protected by 4” hoods and 8” hoists, battery protected by 2” thick armour and the conning tower by 12”. The engines and 8 Yarrow boilers (fitted in 1925) supplied 15.000 hp (designed) allowing a speed of 19 knots (trial). Coal bunker capacity 2.040 (maximum) tons.
The Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1891-1892 no. 6 referred to another magazine namely Mittheilungen aus den Gebiete des Seewesens. Here she was called Emperador Carlos V to be built by the firm Gebr. Vea Murgia at Cadiz. Her displacement was 9.235 tons and her maximum medium draught 7,846 metres. The engines were to supply 15.000 hp allowing a speed of 19 (with natural draw)-20 (with artificial draw) miles and with her coal bunker capacity had she a range of 12.000 nautical miles. The armament consisted of 2-28 cm guns placed in turrets protected by 25cm thick armour of steel/compound steel, 8-14cm guns, 4-10cm guns, 2-7cm quick firing guns, 4-5,7cm quick firing guns, 4-3,7cm machine guns, 2 smaller machineguns with the calibre of rifles and finally 6 torpedo tubes. She was fitted out with an armoured deck and the sides were protected by 50cm thick armour in 2 layers one of Siemens-Martin steel and the second one of chrome steel. Fore and aft was a transverse bulkhead planned with a height of 1,8 cm and a beam of 16cm, armoured with 2 layers to a combined thickness of 50 cm. She was to be completed within forty months.
The edition of the magazine Marineblad dated 1895-1896 no. 4 reported her launching on 12 March (Conway’s claimed 13) with a displacement of 9.235 tons and as dimensions 115,82 (between perpendiculars)-123,36 (over all0 x 20,42 x 7,48 (medium)-7,78 (aft) metres. The engines supplied with natural draw 15.000 ihp allowing a speed of 19 miles and with artificial draw 18.500 ihp allowing a speed of 20 miles. The armament consisted of 2x1-28cm Gonzales Hontoria guns placed in barbette turrets fore and aft, 8-14cm Gonzalez Hortoria quick firing guns, 4-10cm quick firing Gonzalez Hontoria guns, 2-7cm quick firing Gonzalez Hontoria quick firing guns,4-3,7cm quick firing Nordenfeldt guns and 2-3.7cm revolver guns. Edition no. 7 reported the delivery by the firm Sc hneider&Co of 2-28cm type Hontoria guns with gun-carriages and the 8 carriages for the 14cm guns. The edition dated 1897-1898 no. 3 referred to the foreign magazine Le Yacht reporting that her first trials were successful.
