US navy building turbine ship according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1903-1904 no. 7

An item referred to the magazine Marine Rundschau reporting that the American rear admiral Melville (1) for his resigning while refuting all objections urgently recommended to test a ship driven by steam turbines. The result was that the Board on Construction proposed the building of such a ship measuring 5.000 ton andnd would ask the next Congress for a budget of 300.000 US dollars to built a ship of the Scout-class.

1. George Wallace Melville (10 January 1841 New York City -17 March 1912 Philadelphia) among navy officer also engineer, author and Arctic explorer. He was responsible for the supervision of designing 120 ships and for instance the introduction of the water-tube boiler. He resigned from military service on 10 January 1903. Earlier on 6 December 1900 was he appointed as Engineer in Chief of the Navy.
