China taking precautions against enemy fleet according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwe Tilburgsche Courant dated 19 August 1900

An item reported that according to tidings received from Kanton at Whampoo heavy guns of 18 and 24cm were installed. Further more sunk the Chinese torpedoes [mines?] to prevent foreign warships to come nearer. Without success tried the Chinese to find an European torpedo export despite the monthly salary of 500 taëls.
