German submarine U293 escaped Spanish interment according to the Dutch newspaper Leeuwarder Courant dated 10 September 1917

An item dated Cadiz the 9th reported that the German submarine U293 was towed by a Spanish torpedo boat into the harbour caused by lacking oil. She was immediately interned. An item dated Madrid 7 October published the next day in the Dutch newspaper De Tijd  reported what happened afterwards. She escaped in the night of the6th-7th with as result that the Spanish premier suspended the responsible high army and navy officers. A second item dated London the 8th reported that her crew was allow to go in Cadiz where ever she wanted and that her officers gave their word of honour no attempts to do to escape.
